Crown Reductions

A crown reduction is a technique used to reduce the entire overall size of a tree. This is often recommended when a tree has outgrown the space in which its growing.

It is important to do this sympathetically so as to keep stress of the tree to a minimum, different tree species respond to pruning differently.

A crown reduction also removes weight and the size of the 'sail' which can make veteran trees with defects much safer in extreme weather.

Crown Lifting

This Pruning technique is often used on mature trees, we will selectively remove just the lower branches of a tree in a manor that leaves as few scars on the main stem as possible and therefore reduces risk of disease.

Crown lifting will give more space under the tree, perfect if the tree is near a building, walkway or road or if access under the tree is required for mowing lawn below. It will also allow more light underneath the canopy and benefit shrubbery growing below.

Dead Wood Removal and Thinning

Crown thinning does not alter the overall footprint of the tree, we will selectively prune each branch to remove the density of foliage within the canopy. This reduces the wind sail effect and allows more air and light into the trees crown.

Deadwood in trees is often a cause of damaged or diseased branches or if a tree is competing for nutrients. Deadwood in a tree poses risk when it is above property or paths and the risk should be assessed and the branches removed if necessary. However if it poses no risk to people or property, we would recommend leaving it as it can be a great habitat for insects and therefore benefit birds such as woodpeckers.

Tree Pruning

Pruning can vary from tree to tree and has different benefits depending on season. Any cut to a tree can be damaging, we will assess the trees structure before making cuts to ensure as few cuts are made as possible and the tree can recover.

Pruning in fruit trees can be beneficial in one of two ways. Winter Pruning when the tree is dormant will help to promote growth of the tree and therefore encourage it to produce fruit in the summer.

Spring Pruning trees can be a good chance to identify any dead branches as the tree comes into leaf. Mainly used in stone fruit trees when a tree is becoming too big and you don't want to encourage vigorous growth.

Tree Removal

As Arborists, cutting down a tree is often a last resort and we will assess other techniques before making the decision to remove it. However where other Pruning techniques are no longer suitable and the tree is becoming a threat to people and property it must be removed safely and in a controlled manor.

We are able to use a number of methods to safely dismantle a tree gently, piece by piece so as not to damage any areas around the tree.

Hedge Trimming

The UKs hedgerows are an important part of our ecology. Good management of these hedges ensures they stay healthy and keeps them looking tidy.

Management can vary depending on the species of hedge. We offer both annual trimming as well as one off maintenance.

Stump Grinding

Stump Removal:

Similar to deadwood in a tree, stumps provide a great ecosystem for wildlife as they decay. If the tree has been removed to make room for something else we are also able to remove the stump by use of a grinder. This will  also prevent the root system from continuing to grow and prevent any regrowth.

Tree / Hedge Planting

"People who do not sustain trees, will soon live in a world that will not sustain people"

As Arborists, we love trees !

Planting them is a very important part of our job and one which we take great pleasure in doing. Although we might not see all the immediate benefits it's nice knowing future generations will.

As well as improving kerb appeal to property, trees provide many benefits including water uptake, wind break and prevent soil erosion as well as proving shade and keeping property cooler during the summer months.

If you are unsure on what species of shrub or tree to plant we are able to help you identify some options.
